Make Up Reading

I am so glad that I picked up this series. I loved "Strange the Dreamer" but I loved this book even more. You really got a great background on the world and how many of the characters became who they are. Lazlo and Sarai are definitely one my most favorite couples ever! Their love story is just so beautiful.  What I love so much about this story is the way Laini Taylor writes villains. There are so many layers to them and you often find yourself feeling so much for them. I really don't want to ruin this for you so I will just say that this is an absolutely beautiful follow up to "Strange the Dreamer". You will not be disappointed!

I decided to listen to the audio version of this because I always like to pick one audio book to listen to as I get ready for bed. This was a good choice. The narrator Kate Orsini was really good. If you love a good Southern Gothic then this novel is for you. Meg has spent her whole life in the shadow of her novelist mother. 3.75 stars This was actually a very hard book to rate for me. For one thing it is one of the most hyped, popular books that I have ever read and I went into it very excited. However, this was one of the slowest books I have ever read. I listened to it on audio and the every VA was fantastic so it had nothing to do with that. For me the book just didn't get going until there was about 45% left. The reason I chose to rate it what I did was because when this book got started it really got started! There were many surprises, twists and turns around every corner. I loved the secrets that the characters that kept from us. The intricate plots woven together kept me hooked. I had no issue with the fact that this totally ends in a cliffhanger. My only other main issue is the fact that it seems like everyone seems to pair up. I love a good romance but we don't need all six of the main characters to either be in love or heading that way. Would I recommend this book? In a heartbeat. I...

2.75 Stars The very first novel by Lauren Oliver that I read was "Before I Fall". I fell madly in love with that book,the writing was lyrical and the story was beautiful. Yes, it was a concept that had been done before but the way that Lauren Oliver wrote this book was just perfect in every way. I have since rad "Panic" as well as "Liesel & Po" and "The Spindlers" and I really liked them. However this book had a hard time holding my interest. I have heard of Lisa Jewell but have never read any of her books. Well, that is going to change because I truly enjoyed this novel!  We first meet newlywed Joey shortly after she and her new husband Alfie has moved from Ibiza to Melville Heights to live with her older brother and his pregnant wife Rebecca. For me though I really enjoyed this book and was going back and forth between a 3.5 stars to a solid 4 stars I ended up going with 3.5. Of course I gave it 4 as we are not able to give half stars! I also felt that the twists were enough to give it a 4 star rating. Barely 1 star! I was very, very disappointed in this novel. You know how you will go to your favorite coffee shop and eye a yummy looking cupcake everytime you? Imagine buying the cupcake thinking you will get a yummy chocolate cream (or whatever your flavor is) and it tastes like the flavor you hate most? You walk away disappointed, right? Maybe even a little bit angry? That was my experience with this book!   I had it on my list for a long time and I finally took the plunge and bought it. A big mistake. This book was nothing like I thought it would be. While I would say the actual writing was not bad the story was not good. Most of the time when a book takes a surprising leap I enjoy it and go along with it but not here. I just couldn't follow along with this one. I won't go into details too much because I don't want to spoil anything. I will say that this is not your typical mystery in a very bad way.

First off I want to thank NetGalley and  Delacorte Press for allowing me to read an advance copy of this novel for a full and honest review. This was a 3.5 stars read for me. This was my first Amanda Searcy book and I did enjoy it quite a bit. The novel had the feel of the old school YA mystery/thrillers that I used to and in reality still do really enjoy reading. It had the feel of Christopher Pike or R.L. Stine (Not Goosebumps R.L. Stine but the YA version). The novel begins with Jenny arriving from Ohio where she lived with her Mother, Step Father and half sister Hailey after an unfortunate incident. to a small town in New Mexico to live with her Father. Shortly after she arrives a slew of fires begin to appear within walking distance of the Motel she is staying in.  There is no point in hiding the fact that Jenny is the one starting the fires as it is revealed very quickly. I have to admit that I was a bit confused by the many poor reviews this book got. I actually liked it a lot. I thought it was very true to the rather rotten way we, as teenagers treat one another and even ourselves in the desperate need to be liked and thought of as cool. I am no longer a teenager and I was raised to actually stand up to bullies but in the process I myself had been attacked by the bullies. I can understand where each and every character was coming from. Alice is a slut who slept with two boys in one night or so says Elaine, Alice is responsible for the death of the coolest boy in school, QB Brandon Fitzsimmons if you ask his best friend Josh. Alice had an abortion if you ask her ex best friend Kelsie. Alice is perfection if you ask the class nerd Kurt. The truth lies somewhere in between. 2.5 stars Here is the thing, I wanted to read this book so bad and I was super excited when I was able to get it on Kindle for 1.99, the problem is that this book was really hard to get into. It just felt flat. It is not because in a lot ways the writing feels like a classic, in fact that was one of the things I enjoyed most about it. The problem was that the storyline fell flat for me. This book had everything I love, good representation, an interesting and funny lead character that you actually could like even though he was rather dickish and relationships that I was rooting for. Yet, with all of that going for it there were times when I could not even bother to care. I actually fell asleep a few times while reading this. I know rom the ratings that I am in the minority here and I may read the next book but I am disappointed. The reason I rounded this up to three stars is because the wide representation in this novel. If not for that it would have only been a two star book.

I honestly can't remember a time in my life when books were not a companion of mine. My Mom, who is no longer with me started me on a journey where I fell in love with a few things and was destined to stay in love and reading was one of the things I remember best. I remember even before I started school I loved books. There was this pop up Snow White book that my Mom bought me as a surprise when I was around two or so. I spent hours playing with that book, opening it up and watching the characters pop up to greet me. There was the "Little Golden Books" like "The Poky Puppy" and "The Shy Little Kitten" that I remember well.  I remember my Mom reading me "The Night Before Christmas" every Christmas Eve before I climbed into bed to dream of all the goodies the fat man in red would bring me.
