Ellie is turning 40 and the best thing to do is to have the most fabulous birthday party that a woman can have. 


Told with alternating timelines, the past which takes place 24 years ago and the present.  In the past we meet best friends Leo and Mish who are ready to celebrate Leo's sweet 16.  Let's just say that things just didn't  go as planned. The present timeline is about Ellie, her fabulous party. Ellie feels like she needs to have THE party, the kind of party that makes all of her friends green with envy.


While I did enjoy this novel and Melissa de la Cruz has a wonderful writing style but I didn't feel like this is much of a thriller. It felt more like an adult contemporary with some mystery thrown in for good measure. If you are looking for a good adult contemporary then pick this up!

Pre World War 1 Europe and the Goldbaum family are an extremely wealthy banking dynasty. Greta Goldbaum from Vienna does not really want to marry her English cousin Albert she does it anyway as that is what is expected and though Greta is a defiant girl she also knows that the sometimes you have to do what is expected. Greta is a fun, gregarious girl while Albert is a serious and quiet man. This novel takes us up through most of World War 1 and we follow the family through it all. With the war brewing we see how anti semitism began to take control of certain parts of Europe. A sweeping tale with Greta at the center this was a novel that I could not put down and though it was a bit long I managed to read it in 24 hours. When Ally arrives at work without her purse and wet from the rain her boss is shocked to see her. Why? She hasn't worked there in ages.
